With its refreshing citrus notes, rich rum character, and unmistakable island vibe, the Mai Tai has become synonymous with tropical cocktails and tiki culture. But despite its reputation, the original Mai Tai wasn't created to be overly sweet—it was designed to showcase the beauty of a great rum.
And its name? That story is just as legendary as the cocktail itself.
The Mai Tai was created in 1944 by legendary tiki bartender Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron.
According to cocktail history, Bergeron served the drink to friends visiting from Tahiti. After taking a sip, one of them exclaimed:
"Mai Tai-Roa Aé!"
A Tahitian phrase meaning:
"Out of this world — the best!"
The name stuck, and a cocktail legend was born. 🌺✨
